Installing and Configuring OpenVPN (Windows)

To use a VPN, you have to install the OpenVPN software on the local PC and then configure it. In the Access section, you can download a zip file with the necessary configuration files. To install OpenVPN:


You have administrator rights.

You have already created a VPN in the Cloud Panel.

You have logged in to your local PC.

  • Download the OpenVPN software
    OpenVPN is available as a 32-bit and a 64-bit version.
  • To start the installation, double-click the installation file.
  • Click Next.
  • To accept the license terms, click I Agree.
  • Click Next.
  • Optional: Enter the following target folder: C:/Program Files/OpenVPN

  • Click Install.
  • The following message will be displayed:

    "Do you want to install this device software?
    Name: TAP-Windows Provider V9 Network adapter
    Publisher: OpenVPN Technologies, Inc."
  • Click Install.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish.

Configure VPN


You have logged in to your Control Panel.

You are in the Cloud Panel.

  • Click Network > VPN.
  • Activate the desired VPN.
  • To download the configuration file, click Download in the Access section.


  • Save the zip file.


    This zip file contains the configuration files.

  • Extract the zip file to the desired folder.

  • Open the folder you extracted the configuration files into.

  • Optional: If you did not install OpenVPN in the target folder C:/Program Files/OpenVPN, you have to open the OpenVPN configuration file with the extension .ovpn and change the following entries:
    ca "<YOUR-INSTALLATION-PATH>\config\ca.crt"
    cert "<YOUR-INSTALLATION-PATH>\config\<vpnID>.crt"
    key "<YOUR-INSTALLATION-PATH>\config\<vpnID>.key"
    • Copy the following files:
      • server security certificate, e.g. ca.crt
      • client security certificate, e.g. vpn1234B_1.crt
      • KEY-file, e.g. vpn1234B_1.key
      • OpenVPN configuration file, e.g. vpn1234B_1.ovpn
    • Paste the files into the following folder:  C:/Programs (x86)/OpenVPN/config or C:/Programs/OpenVPN/config

    OpenVPN has been configured.
